Living Well In The Moment
I joined the gym again after 15 years of swearing them off. The last gym I was a member of was the The Greater YMCA of New York. I was an employee of the Harlem YMCA for five years. Before that I had a brief stint with New York Sports and Racket Club as an employee benefit of Hachette Filipachi Magazines. A benefit that only lasted a short while as the magazine print industry was beginning to see the effects that digital marketing and advertising would have on traditional advertising routes. Companies simply weren’t bringing in as much money so the first thing before the layoffs was cutting the amazing well deserved employee benefits.
All in I left my job at the Harlem YMCA in 2006 and that the last time I had an official gym membership.
I figured I was better off following a solo exercise regiment and for the most part it worked for me.. not that I was ever in spectacular shape but I always did just enough to keep me in working operational capacity. However as we age it’s not so easy snapping back or avoiding the natural aging process that changes our metabolism, our bone density and the ease with which we heal and not to mention the ease with which we can be injured just doing normal everyday things.
A few things made it an easy sell for me (to join the gym and specifically The Equinox) first I had taking a much longer break this time around and it coincided with the fact that I’m in the 40 plus club and the pandemic had me house bound for an entire year basically. I was done done with staying home, I needed to get out of the house or things weren’t gonna go well.My body was literally tired of being at home with not much to do and the city kissy wasn’t as appealing a place to explore..
So just like that I woke up and decided today was the day I joined a gym.I had already visiting the Equinox months prior and knew when it was time I’d be back to sign my name on the dotted line. The cost wasn’t a factor for one it’s not like I was spending money on any other activities and second if I was gonna be out in the midst of a pandemic I was gonna go somewhere that I trusted to practice the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.
The Eqinox exceeded these expectations and my body has been getting in the shape and form iced desired for many years.
I joined the Hudson Yards Eqinox, it’s the newest location in NYC right next to Hudson Yards Mall , a brand new Wholefoods, and not far from Macy’s on 34th Street (the best Macy’s in the country). So there’s many benefits outside of the gym itself that made it a no brained for me.
When I started in January I had a 6 month goal and for the most part over achieved excepts for the love handles I’m currently dealing with .I also waited until now to started buying gym gear (who knew gym gear was so fancy and expensive lol) I get it though I’ve no problem spending that kind of money on great quality tea (as a comparison) but I’m not quick sold on why this would be a good investment for me.Are the $150 gym pants gonna magically improve my actual workout and help me reach my goals faster? Hmm I don’t think so lol . I settled on spending about $70 dollars on two pairs of pants (Nike and and gym tank (Champion) and since Macy’s has amazing sales I made out pretty good.
